Transfer from airport to Hotel. Itinerary commences with dinner tonight

Today we will be out and about sightseeing in Shanghai. Our itinerary will include
Yu Garden, the Old City Gods Temple and the Bund. If time permits a visit to the
Shanghai Arts and crafts Museum. |

22-Jun-10 To Suzhou
After breakfast, to Suzhou by coach. Known as "Venice of the East", Suzhou is built around Grand Canal. The city's many excellent classical gardens have entitled Suzhou the "Garden City". Our sightseeing includes the Grand Canal, water lanes and a sample of the World Heritage listed traditional gardens such as Yipu.
23-Jun-10 Suzhou
A full day in Suzhou including visiting the Silk Embroidery Research Institute and Museum and Silk Reeling Mill. Local specialities include two-sided embroidery, Song brocade, kesi fabric and opera costumes.
24-Jun-10 To Dali
This morning we return to Shanghai to take a flight to Dali via Kunming. On arrival transfer to our hotel in the heart of Dali Old city. |
25-Jun-10 Dali
Morning visit to the market at Shizhou before driving to Zhoucheng village where we have arranged a workshop demonstrating indigo-dyeing techniques.
26-Jun-10 To Lijiang
Today we are driving to Lijiang. This morning we have time for a walking tour to the city wall-gates and plan to visit a silversmith family. |

27-Jun-10 Lijiang
We have a half day sightseeing in the World Heritage listed Lijiang Old City and cultural heart land of the Naxi ethnic nationality. After lunch there will be free time to wander the waterlanes and look for textiles at the many shops lining the streets.
28-Jun-10 To Zhongdian
We are off to the Tibetan city of Zhogdian on the edge of the Tibet Plateau at 3000m. The road will take past the first great bend on the Yangtze River and shortly after to Tiger Leaping Gorge where we can walk down the 1000 steps to the famous tiger ¡®rock¡¯. Expect to arrive in Zhogdian late PM.

Full day¡¯s sightseeing to sample Tibetan textile arts. We will be hosted by a local family for lunch today and walk in the nearby village. Afternoon visit to the Song Zan Lin Monastery. Late afternoon time to visit the local shops for local textiles.
30-Jun-10 Zhongdian to Kunming
Free time this morning before transfer to the airport for our flight to Kunming. Late afternoon visit to Green Lake and surroundings gardens. Dinner in the garden area, transfer to railway station for overnight sleeper train to Kaili. |

Arrive in Kaili at 10am ¨C Kaili is home to Miao and Ge nationalities renown for their embroidery, brocade, wax printing and paper cut work. We will base ourselves in Kaili and over the next three days have arranged a variety of workshops and opportunities to meet with local people involved with textiles and crafts. Techniques include silk felting embroidery, folded silk embroidery, ¡°horse tail¡± and two needle technique. We will balance the textile exploration with afternoon visits to neighbouring villages including visits to markets and craft shops selling
embroidery and other textile products.

04-Jul-10 To Rongjiang
We head downriver today through the forested Miaoling mountains skirting Leigong
Shan Nature Preserve. En route we¡¯ll pass thorugh Yongle, Leishan and Longde
Village where we will make a brief stops.
05-Jul-10 To Zhaoxing
There are plenty of Dong and Miao traditional villages perched along the river bank |

as we follow the Diliu River to the county town of Congjiang where we climb into the hills to visit a Baisha Miao Village. The Miao people in this village wear traditional clothing made from oilskin like fabric. Return to Congjiang and head inland to ZhaoXing drum tower village in the heart of the Dong ethnic region. This stunningly picturesque village is a real jewel in a region of authentic village-scapes.

A full day to explore this traditional Dong village. The woman prepare the traditional brown oil-skin like fabric. Washing fabric in the river, swathes of fabric drying on the balconies of the traditional wooden houses, or woman sitting along side the path beating the fabric are common scenes in Zhaoxing.
07-Jul-10 To Long Ji Terraces
This morning we continue our drive through the hilly Zhuang ethnic minority region to San Jiang where we head down valley to a traditional Dong style "village in the clouds" at Long Ji terrace fields. It¡¯s an easy 30min walk up a well graded path through the villages to reach our simple hotel.
08-Jul-10 Long Ji Terraces to Guilin
This morning we will walk to the top of the terraces for stunning views over the villages and terraced fields. Local women will stop to sell fabrics and demonstrate how they prepare their unique twisted hair style. After lunch head down to the carpark to drive to Guilin.
09-Jul-10 Guilin-Yi River Cruise
This morning we depart for a cruise on the Li River amongst the Guilin¡¯s inspiring limestone peaks and spires. We¡¯ll visit the craft shops and textile displays in Yangshou before returning to Giulin late afternoon. Evening walk around Guilin¡¯s extravagantly lit lakes. |

10-Jul-10 To Beijing
Morning flight to Beijing. This afternoon we will visit iconic sites in Beijing ¨C The
Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square.
11-Jul-10 Beijing
Sightseeing today will include the Dirt Market ¨C great place to pick up unique souvenirs. We¡¯ll also visit Red Gate Gallery displays of modern Chinese art set in a 15th century watchtower and walk in the Hutongs, the narrow traditional lanes still home to many Beijing residents. |

Today we'll visit the Great Wall at Mutianyu and this afternoon the Temple of Heaven, finishing the day at the Pearl Market ¨C this big market sells everything! |
13-Jul-10 Beijing depart Conclude our tour today, transfer to airport for departure flight OR flight to Urumqi to continue our Xinjiang Textile extension.
